Money often produces some interesting characters. Case in point, John McAfee, founder and former CEO of McAfee Associates, one of the largest anti-virus and computer protection services companies in the world. Now a cryptocurrency enthusiast, McAfee has become more and more eccentric over the years, pulling off stunts such as announcing a bid for US President while living on a yacht off the coast of Venezuela, admitting that he refuses to pay taxes and even trying to convince everyone that he knows the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. However, he has stepped up his game and is now threatening to take down the entire US government. Just like his other rhetoric, this, too, will be tossed aside as exaggerated talk by someone with way too much time on his hands. On June 8, McAfee tweeted that he is in possession of data that could prove major corruption across all levels of government. The only way he will keep the information secret is if the government stops, as he sees it, harassing him According to McAfee, he has been tipped off by well-connected friends that a case is being built against him for murder, racketeering and money laundering. He claims to have “31 terabytes” of data that, if he’s arrested, will be released. He adds that he will start with a “corrupt CIA agent and two Bahamian officials.” He threatened in a tweet from two days ago, “I’ve collected files on corruption in governments. For the first time, I’m naming names and specifics. I’ll begin with a corrupt CIA agent and two Bahamian officials. Coming today. If I’m arrested or disappear, 31+ terabytes of incriminating data will be released to the press.” If there’s no case to be built, there doesn’t seem to be the need of mounting a public display of aggression against the government. It certainly provides something to consider and makes one ponder what McAfee’s agenda truly is - is it just to stay in the limelight, or does he actually have a legitimate goal? If this is just another attempt to keep his name in the papers, then the logical conclusion would be that all of his claims are nothing more than similar attempts, making them equally as irrelevant.
