The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden will unveil a much-anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) executive order next week, according to a report citing several people familiar with the matter. The order will define how the United States sets about regulating AI.

Biden is expected to unveil a much anticipated executive order on Monday focused on regulating AI, according to a report. The order is expected to mandate that AI models face stringent evaluations before they’re used by federal personnel and to ease barriers for highly skilled workers seeking to immigrate to the U.S. in order to boost the country’s technological competitiveness.

The Washington Post, citing several people familiar with the matter, reported that the order would require “advanced AI models to undergo assessments before they can be used by federal workers.”

The order has yet to be finalized or formally announced, but at a Chamber of Commerce event in September, U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Anne Neuberger reportedly described it as “incredibly comprehensive.”

Should Monday be the day, it would be a timely move just a few days before top officials and leading figures gather for an international summit on AI technology at the iconic Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom.

The summit will bring together international governments, leading AI companies, and experts in research to discuss the risks of AI, “especially at the frontier of development,” and discuss how they can be mitigated through internationally coordinated action.

“To fully embrace the extraordinary opportunities of artificial intelligence, we must grip and tackle the risks to ensure it develops safely in the years ahead,” said U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The announcement of the executive order had been expected soon, particularly as the Biden administration recently secured voluntary commitments from 15 AI companies to help advance the development of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI.

In its September 2023 statement on the commitment pledges, the White House stated that “the Administration is developing an Executive Order and will continue to pursue bipartisan legislation to help America lead the way in responsible AI development.”

In order for artificial intelligence (AI) to work right within the law and thrive in the face of growing challenges, it needs to integrate an enterprise blockchain system that ensures data input quality and ownership—allowing it to keep data safe while also guaranteeing the immutability of data.
