The Pokemon Company, the brains behind the popular gaming franchise, could be making a push into Web 3.0 as it announces its search for an industry expert.

According to the job listing, the company is looking for a Corporate Development Principal to assist the board in its long-term strategic direction and advise on operating principles. The successful applicant will also be tasked with the role of creating a platform to test new “big ideas” around the brand.

The Pokemon Company’s listing disclosed that the ideal candidate for the role should possess “Deep knowledge and understanding of Web 3, including blockchain technologies and NFTS, and/or metaverse.” Aside from having deep knowledge of blockchain, the company is also looking for an individual with extensive connections with metaverse firms.

Gleaning from the above, experts predict that the company could be making an all-out play into blockchain, but it remains unclear which route it will take. The easiest option for The Pokemon Company could be non-fungible tokens (NFTs), given the number of unofficial NFTs linked to the project.

The Pokemon Company has been in and out of court to prevent one firm from promoting an NFT-based Pokemon mobile game. Another option available to the company is the integration of NFTs into new gaming titles, a decision that has split the opinions of gamers.

For enthusiasts, Pokemon’s venture into Web 3 could spike adoption rates given a large community, extensive catalog of video games, and a deep trading card collection culture.

The Pokemon Company offers a salary range between $150,000 – $224,000 with additional perks of paid family leave, life insurance, commuter benefits, and a comprehensive relocation package. According to the job listing, the role is based in Washington, with the availability of a hybrid work environment expected to sweeten the deal.

Video game publishers flirting with blockchain gaming

Video game publishers are mulling over the idea of infusing Web 3 elements in their new titles to keep up with the digitization trend. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa remarked that the metaverse could be the next big frontier for video games.

“The metaverse is attracting the attention of many companies around the world, and we believe that it has great potential,” Furukawa said.

Japanese-based game publishers like Nintendo, Sega, Square Enix, and Konami have also confirmed that they are exploring NFTs and metaverse in their upcoming gaming titles.
