Closets stashed with fashionable wardrobes worn on the gala, awards nights, and numerous other occasions and rarely used daily are common among celebrities, who often sell them as pre-loved items at a marked-down rate. A startup participating in Block Dojo Philippines looks to turn this into profit with the aim of showcasing the utility of blockchain in promoting sustainability.

Arvin Torres is pitching to Block Dojo Philippines his Celebrity Greenbox initiative, a marketplace for local celebrities looking to have their pre-loved clothes and other items sold online.

“We wanted to help the environment in promoting a more circular economy [by] selling those items to their fans,” Torres told CoinGeek Backstage reporter Claire Celdran on the sidelines of the Block Dojo Philippines bootcamp in Bataan early in January.

While local artists can sell their pre-loved items on their social media platforms, putting them on sale on Celebrity Greenbox will reduce the burden off their shoulders and time off their already busy schedule. The marketplace also offers seamless browsing of items for users, eliminating the need to jump from one social media page to another just to know what pre-loved items their favorite celebrities offer for sale.

With the help of blockchain technology, Celebrity Greenbox can also assure its users that all items put up on sale are authentic and come from celebrities themselves.

With his platform, Torres seeks to help celebrities gain knowledge of what blockchain can do for them.

For now, Celebrity Greenbox is looking into leveraging blockchain for authentication, but Torres said he is eyeing to utilize it to develop other use cases for the platform in the future.

“We plan on…once we have a deeper knowledge about blockchain, we’d be able to see more potential in it and be able to add value to those celebrities,” said the Celebrity Greenbox founder.

However, with any other business, setting up Celebrity Greenbox is no easy job, especially given the local celebrities’ little knowledge of blockchain technology. But Torres sees a silver lining in the popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) among Filipino artists, which he plans to take advantage of and incorporate into the platform.

Torres believes Celebrity Greenbox can be a stepping stone in realizing the full potential of blockchain to solve real-world problems, including fraud in the e-commerce industry.

“Authentication protects not just the celebrities but also their fans, knowing that what they’re getting is actually what they’re buying,” he noted.

As an advocate of sustainability, Torres is looking to leverage the influence of celebrities to trigger the mass adoption of emerging technologies that would actively support and improve environmental protection.
