Global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company believes that COVID-19 reshaped the traditional work setups as the effects of the crisis are still apparent. In light of this, the consulting firm identified three global trends that were made possible because of COVID-19, and among them was the creation of more remote work, virtual transactions, and faster adoption of digital technologies.
Still recovering from the pandemic, the Philippines’ workforce shifted from conventional office work to work-from-home and hybrid systems, and the trend continued as of writing with the establishment of yet another trend in the face of “digital nomadism.”
New technologies and work trends offer more opportunities
If firms in the country tap into cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), metaverse, and blockchain, the Philippines could anticipate that routine and repetitive tasks will be automated, transparency will be served, and no time will be wasted—thus transforming the world of work.
For example, with the current rise of AI, apps like the popular ChatGPT could help employees summarize reports and meetings, giving them more time for more important tasks. Digital payments are also on the rise because of the boom in blockchain and digital currency that could potentially help workers in the field by timestamping every transaction made.
Global employment platform Multiplier anticipates that with the evolving technologies, new job roles are emerging and will become “the cornerstone of the future.” Predicting the future of the workforce, the platform listed ten jobs that will become significant soon including in gamification, metaverse, cybersecurity, virtual reality, and machine learning.
But do these new work trends provide Filipinos with the promise of flexible work hours and work-life balance? The question has yet to be answered.
