There is more to blockchain technology than its applications in digital currency. One company that proves this is SmartLedger, which considers itself as the world’s leading blockchain distribution channel. The company’s Chief Development Officer, Gregory Ward, tells The Bitcoin Bridge that it was able to establish itself thanks to strategic partnerships with many wonderful companies and developers in the blockchain ecosystem.

“We pride ourselves on being able to deliver expertise, consultation, and development assistance to any enterprise or anyone who needs to build a ‘connect’ into the powers of blockchain,” said Ward. “And then through that, we also have a very creative side of ourselves within SmartLedger.”

Fortifying cybersecurity through blockchain

One of the very first and crucial applications of blockchain conceived by the SmartLedger team was Certihash. Ward described this as a suite of products for cybersecurity that mimics or mirrors the cybersecurity framework of the National Institute of Science and Technology.

The idea, as Ward explained, was to have a cybersecurity platform that incorporated blockchain in order to preserve the integrity and auditability of data. The idea was quite revolutionary on its own—in fact so revolutionary that it quickly grew into something much bigger than initially expected.

“Certihash was a product that we felt was significant enough to give it a company of its own,” Ward said. And so the SmartLedger team ended up creating an entirely new company and corporation.

The Chief Development Officer went on to explain the five functions under cybersecurity: identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover. Out of these five, the Certihash team determined that detection is one of the most important, especially as the average detection time before a cybersecurity breach is discovered is 212 days.

“It’s unacceptable,” Ward said. “It’s unacceptable for any enterprise to have that long of a wait before they’re able to be aware of something happening on the network.”

In order to address this, the first out of five applications to be rolled out within Certihash is Sentinel Node. With detection as its primary priority, Sentinel Node provides organizations with the ability to monitor all important logs and files, generating an auditable trail of everything that happens within those concerned log and files.

Ward said that one of the first things that hackers want to do when they exit a system is to erase any sign of malicious activity. Sentinel Node makes it so that hackers are unable to do so.

Certihash on another blockchain? Absolutely not possible

So why BSV? Talking about his journey into cybersecurity and blockchain, Ward said that the applicability of BSV to every and any industry just seemed like the right fit for him. More than that, Ward claimed there was no other blockchain capable of running a system like Certihash.

“Looking across the environment of blockchains, absolutely not,” Ward said.

Ward explained that a critical factor for Certihash to work is BSV’s ability to support micropayments down to a thousandth of a penny. Without it, he believes that it is impossible to capture the necessary detail of information needed to keep track of log files being constantly updated. And that’s not even all of it, either.

“Of course, the security of the proof of work that BSV is able to achieve with the scalability makes it an absolute fit, because you can’t have a blockchain that gives up on security measures by moving to a less secure model than proof of work and then claim that you are a cybersecurity company.”
