Freedom of the Press Foundation Announces Support for Cryptocurrency Donations, Accepts 1000 ETH From Mainframe

Freedom of the Press Foundation announces support for cryptocurrency donations, accepts 1000 ETH from Mainframe

The Donation Will Further A Shared Commitment to Protect Journalists and Whistleblowers Through the Use of Technology

June 19, 2018 Mainframe, the creator of a decentralized application platform that aims to be censorship and disruption resistant, today announced a donation of 1,000 ETH from its Proof of Heart Community Campaign to the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF). Together, the two organizations share a commitment to protecting freedom of speech, promoting the use of digital security tools, and preserving the public’s right to information.

The donation will enable FPF to expand its mission of protecting journalists and whistleblowers in the digital age and to investigate the potential use of decentralized technology for combatting censorship and promoting security. It also marks the first major cryptocurrency donation in FPF’s history and the launch of support for donating in multiple cryptocurrencies. FPF now accepts donations in Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and Zcash (ZEC).

Mick Hagen, Mainframe founder and CEO said: “The Mainframe team is thrilled to be supporting the Freedom of the Press Foundation, an organization whose work we all deeply believe in. Our community is committed to the protection of freedom, privacy, and digital security, and we are proud to support their mission beyond the contribution being made today — the first of its kind in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape. Ultimately, we expect the contribution to kickstart an ongoing relationship to preserve these ideals amidst the evolution of the digital landscape.”

Mainframe’s mission is to build a decentralized application platform for the new web, by combining the best features of today’s top networking protocols and decentralized services, while also maintaining the highest level of security and user ownership of data. As trust in governments, corporations and media continues to decline, Mainframe wants to enable people to communicate securely — by reliably, privately, and securely routing data packets through the Mainframe peer-to-peer network.

FPF currently leads the development of SecureDrop, an open-source whistleblowing platform used by more than 60 major news organizations worldwide, and has trained thousands of journalists around the world in digital security practices.

Trevor Timm, Freedom of the Press Foundation’s Executive Director said: “Freedom of the Press Foundation is extremely grateful to Mainframe and their community for the generous support of our work. We are excited that Mainframe shares our commitment to protecting privacy and free speech and is deeply engaged in furthering those basic human rights through their work.”

Founded in 2012, Freedom of the Press Foundation is dedicated to supporting and defending public interest journalism in the digital age. Its Board of Directors comprises journalists, activists, and whistleblowers, including Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Daniel Ellsberg.
