A hacker group going by the name TheDarkOverlord recently announced that it had “damning evidence” of the terrorist activity that rocked the U.S. on September 11, 2007. It has said that it will release the so-called “9/11 papers” if given enough Bitcoin Core (BTC), or will suppress them if paid even more – millions of dollars’ worth of the cryptocurrency. It began offering samples on Steemit to prove their authenticity, and the social media platform has now dropped the hammer on the group, banning them from using the service.

Why exactly the group was banned isn’t known. However, the move is most likely in retaliation of the extortion being conducted by the hackers. The site’s Terms of Service state that users will not “Use our Services to pay for, support or otherwise engage in any activity prohibited by law, including, but not limited to illegal gambling, fraud, money-laundering, or terrorist financing activities.”

Steemit is a social media channel built on the Steem blockchain. Despite being stricken from Steemit, the hackers would still have access to their Steem wallets and their posts could appear on other Steem channels.

The site is a popular alternative to sites such as Twitter and Facebook and runs parallel to other channels on the blockchain, such as Busy.org. Busy.org is still displaying some of TheDarkOverlord’s content and any future 9/11 revelations would more than likely be found there.

When the group posted the initial 9/11 content, most social media users were left scratching their heads, pointing out that absolutely no new information not already publicly known had been revealed. The attempts at receiving a large payout of crypto in order to release the papers have been anything but successful.

A few days ago, TheDarkOverlord stated, “We’re going to continue to bend you over a barrel and f**k you if our demands are not met. You know the score. Your censorship and fakenews coverups won’t silence this organisation or its public support. You were warned. To all the other parties involved (airlines, litigation firms, investigation firms, FBI, TSA, FAA, banks, security companies and more), we’re going to burn you down unless you begin to ‘play ball’. This entire situation will soon become far more tragick [sic] to your survival. Make the right choise [sic].”
