After teasing in a tweet that they are working on an update for their code because “Bitcoin isn’t the only #CryptoCurrency in town anymore,” developers of the BitMate Author Donations plugin have finally logged an update to their code. The change log for the plugin details added support for leading cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, and ZCash. Ripple (XRP) still isn’t accepted because mainstream analysts in the crypto space don’t believe it falls under the “crypto” category of digital currencies.
BitMate is a way for authors and content producers on the WordPress ecosystem to receive tips and donations for their work. While tipping and donations via cryptocurrencies have long been a staple of online culture, plugins like BitMate help provide a cleaner interface to do so. With the plugin, authors and content producers can direct their readers and followers to an address field which they may fill with their respective details. This can be done anywhere within a WordPress site, automatically generating a cryptocurrency donation box wherever it is placed with the [bitmate-author-donate] shortcode.
Below are is a screenshots of the plugin as hosted from BitMate’s own website:
The WordPress plugin adapts to a modern multi-currency display when several cryptocurrencies are added to its portfolio. It also sets a label and a message when using compatible installed wallets. The plugin’s clean visuals use local and self-hosted fonts in order to avoid calling other servers. Web-based fonts like those freely available from Google are transcoded down to a local browser’s defaults when encountered.
Content makers using the plugin are advised to use compatible URI (uniform resource identifiers) whenever possible. However, for Bitcoin Cash users, the plugin has not yet announced backwards compatibility with the upgraded CashAddr format introduced by developers from Bitcoin ABC. Recently, content-based monetization platforms like Yours.org and socially-oriented tools Tipprbot have helped foster camaraderie among users of sensible cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Cash.
The support for BCH in the BitMate plugin for WordPress is a welcome addition to the growing community of crypto users who believe that peer to peer electronic cash will connect people through a network that brings sound money to the world. The painstaking work of authors and content producers to create reliable, entertaining, and significant content reflects what the Bitcoin Cash community is all about: empowering people to create and participate in deciding the future.
